In Holy Rosary Church, Lawrence, Massachusetts, the Sodality of the Catholic Women of the Corpus Christi Parish has been established under the protection of St. Rita.
The purpose of the sodality is to perpetuate devotion to St.Rita through prayer and charitable works in her name. Through our activities we will continue to support both spiritually and financially, Corpus Christi at Holy Rosary Church.
St.Rita's Sodality, Committee Members and Tradition
In 1927, St. Rita's Sodality was founded by 10 women. Today, it is the largest Sodality in the Archdiocese with over 400 members, 50 of whom compromise the governing body. They meet the first Saturday of each month and attend Mass the same day at 4:00 pm.
The Feast of St. Rita is celebrated the weekend closest to her Feast day of May 22nd. The weekend of tradition starts the Friday with a public triduum in honor of St. Rita, consisting of litany, homily, reflection and Benediction at Corpus Christi Parish.
On Saturday, Committee Members sponsor a moving tradition, a Mass and candlelight ceremony in honor of members who died during the past year ( May 1st through April 30th ). This is followed by pastry and coffee in the parish center.
A relative of each deceased member is given a blessed rose as he or she enters the church to be placed on the alter when the relatives name is called. Simultaneously, a single candle is lit as the bells toll.
On Sunday , all members will gather as a group for the Mass of the Roses in honor of St. Rita at which each person attending Mass recieves a blessed rose. The initiation of new members will also take place at this time . Each new member recieves a medal on a ribbon to be worn at all St. Rita events. This is followed by breakfast in the Parish Center. Tickets are required and can be purchased from Committee Members.
During this week, we bring roses to St. Rita Members who are confined to nursing homes.
